SERMON NOTES:  WHAT DO YOU CALL A KING?               FBC-PC  12-16-12AM     Luke 1:26-45 with Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6

Using notes from E. Schyler English in THE PILGRIM Dec. 1981 from original message 1970

When a baby is anticipated it is common for the expectant parents to ask, What shall we call the baby?
For Mary and later Joseph that question was removed by the prophet Isaiah and the Angel Gabriel.
This child was different from every other child ever born.

  1. Immanuel Isaiah 7:14 God with us Given as a sign to a faithless King.
cf. John 14:9 Jesus and God the Father one.
  2. Wonderful Isaiah 9:6 Shepherds wondered at the Angelic message and wondered
at the divine circumstances that brought them to the Christ child.
The Magi came from a far to wonder and worship Him. During his ministry people
    wondered (Lu. 4:22; 11:14; 24:41)
  3. Counselor Isaiah 9:6 Full of Grace and truth (Jn. 1:14) spoke the words of life and authority (6:23)
He taught and counseled as no man ever had (Matt. 5,6,7; John 7:46)
  4. Mighty God Isaiah 9:6 With God, Was God, Created all things (John 1:1-3,18;)
  5. Eternal Father Isaiah 9:6 Jehovah of the Old Testament (John10:30).
  6. Prince of Peace Isaiah 9:6 To know real peace we must know the Prince of Peace.
         Col. 1:30; Eph. 2:14; Phil. 4:6-7;
Peace throughout World comes when Jesus the Prince of Peace comes to rule and reign after the great Tribulation.
  7. Jesus Matt. 1:21 name designated by heavenly messenger for Marys virgin-born Son.

Salvation is in the name Jesus. (Mk. 10:45). He was the only born with the express purpose of dying
      ( Eph. 1:3-8; Gal. 4:4-5).
By His death atonement way made for sin and redemption purchased for believing sinners.
Observe that of the seven names given before His birth, one is above all others the name of His humanity, Jesus.
In our reverence for His person we usually accord Him His full title, which pertains both to His Deity and His humanity -- the Lord Jesus Christ.
